Recent changes under Decree 586 have introduced modifications to trademark renewal fees and requirements in Libya. On 3 February 2025, the Libyan Ministry of Economy provided additional guidance for foreign trademark owners operating in the country.
New Renewal Fee Structure for Foreign Entities
Foreign trademark holders are now subject to a renewal fee of USD 2,000 per year for each trademark in a single class. They may choose to:
- Pay a lump sum of USD 20,000 for the full ten-year renewal period, or
- Make annual payments, with the first instalment due upon renewal and subsequent payments required before each yearly deadline.
A six-month grace period is granted only for the first renewal cycle. However, it remains unclear whether the annual payment option is explicitly incorporated into the decree’s amendments.
Publication and Certification of Renewals
Once a renewal is processed, the Trademark Office will publish the renewal details electronically and issue an official renewal certificate, ensuring that all records are properly maintained and accessible to relevant stakeholders
