The Iraqi Trademark Office (TMO) has officially transitioned from the 7th to the 11th edition of the Nice International Classification of Goods and Services, effective 14 January 2025. This update allows IP owners in Iraq to reclassify their registered trademarks in line with the latest classification system.

Fee Structure and Classification Adjustments

While official fees remain unchanged for now, the TMO has indicated plans to revise the fee structure to align with the Nice Classification system. This involves replacing the previous local subclass system with the class heading framework used internationally. As a result, trademark fees will be determined based on the number of class headings, which may affect overall costs for applicants.

Impact of the Transition

By adopting the 11th edition, Iraq aims to enhance consistency and transparency in trademark classification while aligning its intellectual property system with global standards. This change is expected to streamline processes and improve clarity for trademark owners operating in the country.
